defend the cause of the weak and fatherless

psalm 82:3

Kimana is a small town in Southern Kenya nestled along the border of Tanzania near Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Seeing a great need within his country for ministering to orphans, Dr. Steve Kabachia, the founder of JHM, had a vision to develop an orphan ministry through our local churches in the region.  During a church-planting mission in this region many years ago, he saw a specific need in this community.  After years of dreaming, planning and fundraising, the vision is now being realized.

Our vision is that it will be a self-sufficient children’s home with electricity, clean water, kitchen, dining, lodging facilities, and a farm. We initially purchased a 20-acre plot of land and have slowly developed the site through the years. We anticipate having a fully-functional, independent farm on which we can produce and sell crops that will financially provide for the ministry. Work has begun on 5 houses, kitchen facility and storage building but we still have much work remaining.  Each housing unit will ultimately sleep 12 orphans which will allow us to serve up to 60 orphans. The children will go to the local school and will have an opportunity to further their education and develop life skills. Each home will have their own small plot where they can learn to grow and produce their own food. These orphans will be integrated into the community, schools and local churches where we hope to prepare them as they grow up.

After our medical mission trip to Tororo in 2013, our mission team traveled to Kimana and participated in a service of dedication of the first orphanage building.  Many of the Agape Fellowship leadership attended including some local community leaders.  Watch this video to hear Dr. Kabachia explain the vision for the orphan ministry.

In 2018, an electrified fence was installed around the 20 acres to prevent wildlife from eating the crops. Also, a deep water borehole was drilled that will supply the entire site with clean water. We are partnering with our friends at Designs for Hope to send a team in February 2020 to install the water pump and irrigation lines for the land. Once completed, we will be one step closer to opening the orphanage for children.
